Course Description
The standards covered in 8th Grade Language Arts can be viewed at https://www.georgiastanards.org/Georgia-Standards/Pages?ELA-6-8.aspx. They include reading and analyzing a range of nonfiction and fiction texts, writing, and grammar. Students are expected to be organized and prepared throughout the course. Students will be expected to read at least 20 minutes nightly from a self-selected book. One fiction and nonfiction book analysis form will be due every 4 weeks. These forms are available in the classroom.
Class Rules and Expectations
Students are expected to behave in an appropriate manner that does not disrupt the learning environment or disrespect anyone in the classroom. Class rules will be discussed during the first days of class. The student agenda describes the BMS Discipline Policy in detail.
Grading Procedure
Summative (Tests, Essays, Projects) 50%
Formative (Daily Work, Homework) 20%
Quizzes 10%
Benchmark 20%
Restroom/Locker Breaks
During the day, students will have designated opportunities to use the restroom and go to their lockers. Due to these designated breaks, students will not be permitted to go to the restroom or to their locker at other times during class.
Classroom Supplies
It is the responsibility of the student to have all classroom supplies and materials daily. We do not distribute language arts textbooks in eighth grade: those books will be left in the classroom, and students will have the option to "check out" a book if needed to complete an assignment or study for a test. Writing folders will also be stored in the classroom. Students must have a notebook for all handouts and class notes: this notebook and an independent reading book are the only items that students will have to bring to class.
Communication
Mrs. Misley wll send emaisl to parents. Please make sure your email address is correct in PowerSchool.
